Our 1/4" white bird netting provides fine-mesh protection for gardens, berry patches, and fruit trees. With a 6 mm opening, it is one of the most versatile mesh sizes available: small enough to block even the tiniest birds and insects, while still allowing light, air, and water to pass through freely.
White netting is more visible to birds than black, which adds a deterrent effect before birds even reach the net. It also blends naturally into bright or flowering garden settings.
What birds and animals does it keep out?
At 1/4" (5 mm), this netting blocks a wider range of species than any larger mesh size:
- Finches, sparrows, wrens, and other small garden birds
- Starlings, blackbirds, and robins
- Pigeons and larger birds
- Squirrels and rabbits (when secured at ground level)
Also protects against insects
The 1/4" (5 mm) opening also keeps out larger insects including cicadas, cabbage white butterflies, and some fruit flies. This makes it a strong choice for organic gardeners who prefer physical barriers over chemical treatments.
Is this netting bird safe?
At 1/4" (5 mm), the mesh opening is small enough to prevent birds from getting their head or body through. This is the key safety criterion: netting becomes dangerous to wildlife when the opening is large enough for a bird to partially enter but not exit. With a 1/4" mesh, contact with the net results in deflection rather than entanglement, making it one of the safest options available for garden bird exclusion.
Best uses by plant type
The right mesh size depends not only on the birds in your area, but also on how close the netting sits to your plants. A fine mesh like 1/4" is especially useful when netting is draped directly over bushes or low-growing crops, where birds could otherwise peck through larger openings.
Berries
Blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries are among the most targeted crops in home gardens. Robins, starlings, and sparrows can strip a bush within hours once fruit begins to ripen. For blueberries in particular, when netting is draped directly over bushes rather than suspended above them, a 1/4" mesh prevents birds from reaching berries through the net with their beaks. Strawberries and low-growing berries benefit from the same approach, as the fine mesh also helps deter slugs and larger insects at ground level.
Vegetables and seedlings
Tomatoes, peppers, leafy greens, and seedling trays are vulnerable to pecking and scratching. The 1/4" mesh is well suited to row covers and low tunnel setups over vegetable beds. It is also effective for protecting newly seeded lawn areas from birds pulling up seed.
Other applications
Ponds and aquaculture
The 1/4" mesh is well suited for covering ornamental ponds, koi ponds, and small aquaculture setups. Herons are the primary predator to guard against: they wade into shallow water and can empty a pond quickly. Stretching the netting over the pond surface and securing it at the edges creates an effective barrier. For larger ponds, suspend the netting from perimeter stakes or a cable system to prevent sagging over the water. This setup also keeps out other predators such as raccoons and otters.
Balcony gardens and rooftop farms
Container gardens on balconies and rooftops are exposed to birds from multiple angles, including from above and from the sides. The 1/4" white mesh can be used to enclose planter boxes, raised beds, and container fruit trees. Its light color blends well with most urban settings. For permanent or semi-permanent installations on structures, ensure the netting is secured with appropriate clips or cable ties rated for outdoor use.
Installation tips
For best results, suspend the netting above plants rather than laying it directly on them. A gap of at least 10 cm (4") between the net and the plant prevents birds from pecking through the mesh from outside. Secure edges at ground level with garden staples, stones, or clips to close off access from below.
Reusable season after season
This netting is made from UV-stabilized polypropylene. Once the season ends, simply remove, fold, and store. With proper care it can be reused for multiple growing seasons.
Material
This netting is made from UV-stabilized high-density polyethylene (HDPE).
HDPE is rot-proof, chemical-resistant, and maintains flexibility in both hot and freezing temperatures.
The UV stabilizers are incorporated into the fibers themselves during manufacturing, not applied as a surface coating. This means the protection does not wear off over time with handling or washing.
How long will it last?
Lifespan depends primarily on two factors: how the netting is used, and how it is stored between seasons.
For seasonal use (deployed during the growing season and stored in a cool, dry place for the rest of the year), your netting typically lasts 5 to 10 seasons.
For permanent or year-round outdoor installation, expect a lifespan of 3 to 5 years, as continuous sun exposure accelerates degradation even with UV stabilization.
Extend the lifespan of your netting
Remove the netting at the end of each growing season. Rinse off any debris, fold loosely (avoid tight creasing), and store away from direct sunlight. Proper seasonal storage is the single most effective way to extend the life of the netting.
A note on white netting and UV exposure
White and light-colored netting absorbs less heat than black, but is generally more susceptible to UV degradation when left outdoors year-round. For permanent installations in high-sun climates, black HDPE netting tends to last longer. White is best suited for seasonal use.
