If you're dealing with intense summer heat or managing a greenhouse that builds up too much warmth, Aluminet is a more effective option than standard shade cloth.
Where conventional mesh absorbs heat and re-radiates it into the surrounding area, Aluminet reflects it, keeping temperatures noticeably lower underneath. It's a practical upgrade for anyone who needs reliable temperature control, not just shade.
What is Aluminet shade cloth?
Aluminet shade cloth is a reflective, metallised shade netting designed for applications where standard black or green shade cloth falls short.
Unlike conventional HDPE mesh, Aluminet is made from aluminised HDPE strips that reflect sunlight rather than absorbing it. This makes a measurable difference in temperature management, particularly in enclosed or semi-enclosed structures like greenhouses and tunnels.
Material & construction
Aluminet is woven from aluminised polyethylene strips, giving it its distinctive silver appearance. The reflective surface bounces a significant portion of solar radiation away rather than converting it into heat, which is the key functional difference from standard shade cloth.
It's lightweight, resistant to UV degradation, and maintains structural integrity across multiple seasons. Edges are reinforced to prevent fraying, and metal grommets are installed at regular intervals for secure fastening with rope, wire, or zip ties.
Available shade rates
Aluminet is available in five shade ratings to suit different crops and structures:
- 40% — Light diffusion for sun-tolerant crops that benefit from reduced heat load
- 50% — Balanced option for a wide range of vegetables and ornamentals
- 70% — Suited to shade-preferring species and high-heat environments
- 80% — Heavy shading for sensitive crops or intensive heat management
- 90% — Near-total light exclusion, typically used for blackout applications
Typical applications
- Greenhouse and tunnel temperature control: The reflective surface reduces internal temperatures more effectively than absorptive shade cloth, making it particularly useful in summer or in warmer climates.
- Crop protection: Suitable for vegetables, leafy greens, herbs, cut flowers, and nursery stock that require controlled light and heat conditions.
- Frost protection: When used as an additional layer at night, Aluminet can help retain radiated heat from the soil, offering a degree of frost protection in mild frost conditions.
- Livestock and poultry shelters: Reduces heat stress in animal enclosures without restricting airflow.
- Outdoor growing structures: Pergolas, shade houses, and hoop houses where heat management is a priority.
Durability
The aluminised coating is integrated into the weave rather than applied as a surface treatment, which means it doesn't peel or degrade in the same way as coated alternatives.
The material resists UV breakdown, retains its reflective properties over time, and performs consistently across seasons with standard care. It is not recommended for permanent burial or prolonged contact with standing water.
- Select four stable anchor points (trees, posts, hooks, or wall anchors). Ensure 14" to 36" of space between the anchor points and netting corners for optimal tension and stability.
- Attach the netting’s metal D-rings to the anchor points using ropes, carabiners, or bungee cords. Use turnbuckles on two corners for precise tension adjustments.
- Fix the first corner, then the opposite corner to establish the desired tension and angle.
- Adjust the remaining corners to eliminate sagging and balance the fabric.
- Tighten progressively to avoid overstretching and ensure even tension across the netting.
- Verify stability by checking for smooth contact with no sharp friction points, making any necessary adjustments for a secure setup.

FAQ
No, this shade cloth isn’t waterproof. It’s made from high-quality knitted HDPE, which allows air to flow through while providing excellent shade. If you’re looking for waterproof coverage, check out our shade sails section for options that keep both sun and rain at bay.
It depends on the model you choose. Our shade cloths block anywhere from 30% to 90% of the sun’s rays. This lets you pick just the right level of shade for your space. Want to explore all the options? Check out our full collection to see the different types and their shading percentages.
Absolutely! You don’t always need posts to install a shade cloth. You can attach it directly to existing structures like walls, greenhouse frames, garden fences, chicken coops, pergolas, or even sturdy wires or cables.
Just be sure your fixing points are strong, secure, and properly spaced to keep the cloth tight and stable. It’s a flexible solution for creating shade wherever you need it.
Our shade cloths are designed to handle everyday wind conditions without trouble. They’re made with reinforced edges to add strength and help prevent tearing or fraying.
However, like any outdoor cover, we recommend taking them down during heavy winds or storms to avoid damage. A secure and tight installation also makes a big difference in how well your shade cloth stands up to the breeze.
With proper care, our shade cloths can last 5 to 10 years. They’re UV-stabilized to resist fading and made with durable materials built for outdoor use. For maximum lifespan, take them down in winter or extreme weather.
