Aluminet shade cloth at 80% density suits situations where strong heat rejection and near-maximum shading are both required. It blocks most incoming solar radiation while reflecting it away rather than re-radiating it as heat, making it a practical choice for animal enclosures, outdoor structures in extreme climates, and the small range of plants that genuinely thrive in very low light.
How aluminet works
Standard black or green shade cloth absorbs solar radiation and releases it as heat downward. Aluminet redirects that energy away from the covered area entirely. The result is a noticeably cooler environment underneath, without the heat buildup that solid or woven covers tend to produce.
Air circulation
The open knit construction allows air to move freely through the fabric. This matters most in enclosures and shelters where ventilation is as important as shade: a cover that traps warm air underneath undermines the cooling effect. The open mesh keeps conditions stable on both sides of the cloth.
Shade rate
At 80% shading, the cloth intercepts four-fifths of incoming solar radiation while allowing a small amount of diffused light through. That remaining 20% is enough to support photosynthesis in deep-shade plants, but too little for most vegetables, herbs, and fruiting crops to grow productively.
What is it good for?
80% aluminet covers the overlap between high-shade plant applications and heat management for animals and structures:
- Orchids and staghorn ferns: Both are among the few plants that perform reliably under 80% shading. Orchids in particular are sensitive to direct sun and do best in bright but deeply filtered conditions. Staghorn ferns scorch easily and need this level of protection in hot climates. At 80%, aluminet provides the low-intensity light they require while its reflective properties keep temperatures from climbing.
- Deep-shade ornamentals: Caladiums, certain philodendrons, and other foliage plants adapted to forest floor conditions can handle 80% shade. These are plants where the concern is not light access but heat and UV damage.
- Propagation and seedling trays: Young plants and cuttings at vulnerable stages benefit from strong shading during establishment. 80% reduces both light intensity and temperature stress while root systems develop.
- Greenhouses in extreme climates: In regions with very high summer radiation (desert climates, subtropical areas), 80% aluminet is used as an external greenhouse covering during peak season to keep internal temperatures within a workable range. It is removed or swapped for a lighter cloth once temperatures drop.
- Dog kennels and pet runs: A reliable application at this density. The reflective surface keeps the space beneath significantly cooler than standard shade cloth at the same percentage. Ensure ventilation is maintained and water is always available.
- Livestock shelters and chicken coops: Heat stress affects animal health and productivity. An 80% aluminet cover over an existing open structure reduces thermal gain meaningfully without cutting off airflow.
- Patios and outdoor sitting areas: In climates where summer heat is intense, 80% provides near-maximum shade for people outdoors. The reflective surface makes a noticeable difference compared to standard shade cloth at the same density.
- Carports and parked vehicles: Draped over a vehicle or fixed as a carport canopy, 80% aluminet reduces heat transfer into the cabin. Keep windows open to maintain airflow inside.
Not suitable for most vegetable gardens
80% shading blocks too much light for leafy greens, herbs, fruiting crops, and most ornamentals to grow well. If you're shading a vegetable garden or general greenhouse, a lower density between 40% and 70% will give better results.
Material and construction
These panels are made from aluminized polyethylene (HDPE) using a tape knit construction. The mesh holds its shape across seasons, resists fraying, and keeps its reflective properties under prolonged outdoor exposure. Each panel is hemmed on all sides with reinforced corners and fitted with PVC grommets along the perim

FAQ
No, this shade cloth isn’t waterproof. It’s made from high-quality knitted HDPE, which allows air to flow through while providing excellent shade. If you’re looking for waterproof coverage, check out our shade sails section for options that keep both sun and rain at bay.
It depends on the model you choose. Our shade cloths block anywhere from 30% to 90% of the sun’s rays. This lets you pick just the right level of shade for your space. Want to explore all the options? Check out our full collection to see the different types and their shading percentages.
Absolutely! You don’t always need posts to install a shade cloth. You can attach it directly to existing structures like walls, greenhouse frames, garden fences, chicken coops, pergolas, or even sturdy wires or cables.
Just be sure your fixing points are strong, secure, and properly spaced to keep the cloth tight and stable. It’s a flexible solution for creating shade wherever you need it.
Our shade cloths are designed to handle everyday wind conditions without trouble. They’re made with reinforced edges to add strength and help prevent tearing or fraying.
However, like any outdoor cover, we recommend taking them down during heavy winds or storms to avoid damage. A secure and tight installation also makes a big difference in how well your shade cloth stands up to the breeze.
With proper care, our shade cloths can last 5 to 10 years. They’re UV-stabilized to resist fading and made with durable materials built for outdoor use. For maximum lifespan, take them down in winter or extreme weather.
