If your garden gets a lot of direct sun, a 40% shade cloth is worth considering.
It blocks just under half the incoming light, enough to bring temperatures down and take the edge off for plants that don't handle full sun well. It works well for ferns, spinach, kale, begonias, impatiens, Asian greens, and seedlings that need more sheltered conditions while they establish.
How long will it last?
It's made from HDPE mesh, which holds up well outdoors over time. It resists UV damage, doesn't tear easily, and the colour stays reasonably stable after repeated seasons. The edges are stitched to prevent fraying. Metal grommets are spaced along the sides so you can secure it with rope, zip ties, or hooks depending on your setup.
Where can you use it?
Beyond garden beds, it has a few practical applications worth knowing about:
- Greenhouses, polytunnels, and raised beds that build up too much heat in summer
- Leafy greens, soft herbs, and shade-tolerant plants that are prone to burning
- Pergolas and outdoor sitting areas that get heavy afternoon sun
- Chicken coops and animal shelters where heat becomes a welfare concern
- Pet runs and kennels that need some temperature relief
- Storage areas or equipment bays where heat accumulates
What does it do for your plants?
The main benefits come down to a few practical things:
- Reduces leaf burn: Filters out a meaningful portion of direct UV before it reaches the foliage. Useful for plants with softer or more sensitive leaves.
- Lowers temperature: There's a noticeable difference in air and soil temperature underneath. Plants that were showing heat stress often stabilise once shade is introduced.
- Slows moisture loss: With less direct sun hitting the soil, water evaporates more slowly. This can reduce how often you need to water, depending on your climate.
- Supports growth during hot periods: Plants are less likely to stall or wilt during heatwaves. Growth stays more consistent through summer.
- Better growing conditions overall: Getting the light levels right tends to have a positive flow-on effect — steadier growth, less damage, and generally better results over the season.
- Select four stable anchor points (trees, posts, hooks, or wall anchors). Ensure 14" to 36" of space between the anchor points and netting corners for optimal tension and stability.
- Attach the netting’s metal D-rings to the anchor points using ropes, carabiners, or bungee cords. Use turnbuckles on two corners for precise tension adjustments.
- Fix the first corner, then the opposite corner to establish the desired tension and angle.
- Adjust the remaining corners to eliminate sagging and balance the fabric.
- Tighten progressively to avoid overstretching and ensure even tension across the netting.
- Verify stability by checking for smooth contact with no sharp friction points, making any necessary adjustments for a secure setup.

FAQ
No, this shade cloth isn’t waterproof. It’s made from high-quality knitted HDPE, which allows air to flow through while providing excellent shade. If you’re looking for waterproof coverage, check out our shade sails section for options that keep both sun and rain at bay.
It depends on the model you choose. Our shade cloths block anywhere from 30% to 90% of the sun’s rays. This lets you pick just the right level of shade for your space. Want to explore all the options? Check out our full collection to see the different types and their shading percentages.
Absolutely! You don’t always need posts to install a shade cloth. You can attach it directly to existing structures like walls, greenhouse frames, garden fences, chicken coops, pergolas, or even sturdy wires or cables.
Just be sure your fixing points are strong, secure, and properly spaced to keep the cloth tight and stable. It’s a flexible solution for creating shade wherever you need it.
Our shade cloths are designed to handle everyday wind conditions without trouble. They’re made with reinforced edges to add strength and help prevent tearing or fraying.
However, like any outdoor cover, we recommend taking them down during heavy winds or storms to avoid damage. A secure and tight installation also makes a big difference in how well your shade cloth stands up to the breeze.
With proper care, our shade cloths can last 5 to 10 years. They’re UV-stabilized to resist fading and made with durable materials built for outdoor use. For maximum lifespan, take them down in winter or extreme weather.
