Aluminet shade cloth at 90% density is built for situations where maximum heat rejection is the priority. It reflects the vast majority of incoming solar radiation rather than absorbing it, making it the right choice for animal welfare, vehicle protection, and outdoor spaces where temperature reduction matters more than light transmission.
How aluminet works
Where standard black or green shade cloth absorbs solar radiation and re-radiates heat downward, aluminet redirects it away from the covered area entirely. The result is a meaningfully cooler environment underneath, without the heat buildup that solid or woven covers can create.
Air circulation
The open knit structure lets air move through freely, which is important in applications where ventilation is as critical as shade. Whether you're covering a kennel, a parked vehicle, or a livestock enclosure, airflow helps prevent the heat buildup that can make shade ineffective on its own.
Shade rate
At 90% shading, the cloth blocks nearly all direct solar radiation while still allowing minimal diffused light to pass through. This level of shading is not suited to active plant growth in most cases. It suits situations where thermal protection is the goal and light transmission is a secondary concern.
What is it good for?
At 90% density, the primary use cases shift away from plant production and toward heat management for animals, people, and equipment:
- Dog kennels and pet runs: One of the most common uses. Kennels and outdoor runs heat up quickly under direct sun, and the consequences for animals are serious. Stretched over the top of a run or kennel structure, 90% aluminet keeps the interior significantly cooler while still allowing air to circulate. Always ensure ventilation and access to water.
- Livestock shelters and chicken coops: Barns, poultry enclosures, and open shelters benefit from the reflective barrier during summer. Heat stress affects animal welfare and production. A 90% aluminet cover over an existing structure reduces thermal gain without sealing it off from airflow.
- Parked vehicles: Draped over a car, van, or caravan, aluminet reflects heat before it can transfer into the cabin. This is particularly useful for vehicles parked in open lots or at outdoor events, and for anyone travelling with animals. Keep windows open to maintain airflow inside the vehicle.
- Outdoor events and camping: Used as a canopy over tents, seating areas, or dog show setups, 90% aluminet creates a noticeably cooler space underneath. Its light weight makes it practical to transport and quick to set up.
- Patios and pergolas in extreme heat: For outdoor living areas that get intense afternoon sun, 90% shading delivers the maximum cooling effect available from a breathable fabric cover.
- Mushroom cultivation: The one garden application where 90% shading is genuinely appropriate. Mushrooms require minimal direct light and thrive in the consistently dim, ventilated environment this cloth creates.
- Deep-shade ornamentals: A small range of ornamental plants (including some ferns, caladiums, and philodendrons) naturally grow on forest floors with very little light. In extreme climates, 90% aluminet can replicate those conditions. Outside of these specific varieties, most plants require more light than this density allows.
Not suitable for most plant growing
90% shading blocks too much light for vegetable crops, fruiting plants, and most ornamentals to grow productively. If you're looking for shade cloth for a garden or greenhouse, a lower density (40% to 70%) will be more appropriate.
Material and construction
These panels are made from aluminized polyethylene (HDPE) using a tape knit construction. The open mesh holds its shape across seasons, resists fraying, and maintains its reflective properties under sustained outdoor exposure. Each panel is hemmed on all sides with reinforced corners and fitted with PVC grommets along the perimeter for installation with standard wire, rope, or hardware fittings.
We can custom make any size panel to suit your installation. Contact us with your dimensions and any technical questions about your project.
Durability
Designed for sustained outdoor use, this cloth holds up reliably for 5 to 10 years under normal conditions. The aluminized finish is part of the fabric construction rather than a surface coating, so it won't peel or flake over time. The knit structure resists tearing and holds up in wind-exposed positions. Avoid prolonged contact with standing water or direct ground burial.

FAQ
No, this shade cloth isn’t waterproof. It’s made from high-quality knitted HDPE, which allows air to flow through while providing excellent shade. If you’re looking for waterproof coverage, check out our shade sails section for options that keep both sun and rain at bay.
It depends on the model you choose. Our shade cloths block anywhere from 30% to 90% of the sun’s rays. This lets you pick just the right level of shade for your space. Want to explore all the options? Check out our full collection to see the different types and their shading percentages.
Absolutely! You don’t always need posts to install a shade cloth. You can attach it directly to existing structures like walls, greenhouse frames, garden fences, chicken coops, pergolas, or even sturdy wires or cables.
Just be sure your fixing points are strong, secure, and properly spaced to keep the cloth tight and stable. It’s a flexible solution for creating shade wherever you need it.
Our shade cloths are designed to handle everyday wind conditions without trouble. They’re made with reinforced edges to add strength and help prevent tearing or fraying.
However, like any outdoor cover, we recommend taking them down during heavy winds or storms to avoid damage. A secure and tight installation also makes a big difference in how well your shade cloth stands up to the breeze.
With proper care, our shade cloths can last 5 to 10 years. They’re UV-stabilized to resist fading and made with durable materials built for outdoor use. For maximum lifespan, take them down in winter or extreme weather.
