Landscape fabric staples are the simplest part of a weed barrier installation, but also one of the most important. Without enough of them, even the best fabric will shift, lift at the edges, or leave gaps where weeds can push through.

What they are used for

Securing landscape fabric and weed barriers: Pin the fabric flat to the ground along edges, seams, and across the field to prevent lifting, shifting, or wind movement during and after installation.

Anchoring overlapping sections: Where two strips of fabric meet, staples driven through both layers at the overlap keep the seam tight and weed-free.

Holding burlap and erosion control netting: The same staples work for jute, burlap, and erosion matting on slopes or bare soil.

Securing drip irrigation tubing: Pin tubing along its run to keep it in position under mulch or gravel.

Anchoring garden edging and netting: Use them to fix plastic edging borders, bird netting, or plant covers to the ground.
Why 6 Inches
The 6-inch length (15 cm) is the standard for landscape fabric installation and works in most soil conditions. It penetrates deep enough to hold firmly in normal to loose soil, where shorter 4-inch staples can pull out under wind or ground movement.
For very loose or sandy soil, longer 9-inch staples are recommended. For hard, compacted soil, the 6-inch length is more than sufficient and can be driven in with light mallet taps or foot pressure.
Material and Construction

Galvanized steel: Hot-dip galvanised coating provides rust resistance for long-term outdoor use. The staples will develop a surface oxidation over time, which actually increases their grip in the soil.

11-gauge thickness: Heavy enough to resist bending during installation, even in moderately firm soil.

U-shaped design: The 1 1/2 inches (4 cm) wide U-shape sits flat against the fabric surface and distributes holding force evenly across the top of the staple.

Sharp bevelled ends: Angled tips pierce through fabric layers and penetrate soil cleanly without tearing the material.

Reusable: Staples can be pulled out and reinstalled when lifting fabric at the end of a season.
With or without caps?
Staples are available on their own or with plastic washer caps. The cap is a small round plastic disc that sits between the staple top and the fabric surface. Here is when each option makes sense:

Staples without caps are the right choice for most garden and landscaping applications. When the fabric will be covered with mulch, gravel, or stone, the surface material holds everything in place and caps add no practical benefit. This is the standard option for the vast majority of installations.

Staples with caps are recommended when the fabric will be left uncovered and visible, or when it will be walked on. The cap increases the contact area between the staple and the fabric, distributing pressure more evenly and preventing the staple from pulling or tearing through the material under repeated foot traffic or stress. They are particularly useful for greenhouse floor installations, crawl space vapor barriers, and any area where the fabric surface is exposed.
How many do you need?
As a general rule, place staples every 2 to 4 feet along edges and seams, and every 8 feet across the centre of wider fabric runs. For a 3 ft x 50 ft strip, plan on around 50 to 70 staples. It is always better to have a few extra than to run short mid-installation.
